It still takes getting used to, seeing airfoil 'chutes being used routinely. "Back in the day" (that being when the ol' Ascout used to jump out of planes for fun, ca. 1970-71 before the Army and adventures overseas intervened), the hot setup was modified T-28 surplus 'chutes (modified meaning cut with a soldering iron with the seven gore 7G-TU or more more conservative "double-L" modification removing panels to make steerable) or, if you were rich, the Para-Commander MkI and MkII. The only jumpable "wings" were the Volplane, which had a malfunction rate of about 20% and the fools that were willing to risk it often jumped two reserves, just to cover their bets.

Now the wing is the standard, the container is slightly larger than a big shoebox, and a rig is about $2-3K instead of the $75 I spent on my first surplus T-28. Laughing

But, BOY!....the stuff these modern rigs are capable of....no comparison....
