Tank prototypes from the United Kingdom, 1919-1945
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Tank prototypes from the United Kingdom, 1919-1945

Hello,

I'm looking for a list of UK tank prototypes developed between 1919 and 1945 and still existing. I have this list for now :

-Multi-Turreted Heavy Tank Vickers A1E1 Independent
-Heavy Tank TOG 2
-Heavy Assault Tank Tortoise (A39)
-Infantry Tank Valiant (A38)
-Heavy Assault Tank Excelsior (A33)
-Cavalier (24)
All these tanks are exposed/stored at Bovington

Are there other prototypes still existing?

Thanks

Pierre-Olivier

I think Bovington has a Black Prince (A43) Which was a Churchill widened to accept a larger turret for a 17 Pdr

There is another "Black Prince", at least the hull, owned by the Cadman Brothers.

What about the Centurion Mk.1 at the TM? Is that a prototype?

That's the problem with late prototypes, I don't know if I must consider these as WW2 tanks or post-war ones. I included IS-3 in the Russian tanks list because the IS-3 did participate to fights in August 1945 in Mandchuria.

So, should I include the Centurion prototype in the list? That means that I should also include the ARL 44 in the French WW2 tanks list.. What are your thoughts about this?

Pierre-Olivier

Is the Vickers D3E1 Wheel Track Tank a prototype?

EDIT : After a quick check, yes.

Thanks JH for the information about the Black Prince hull from the Cadmans, I've found a picture of it.
