Don't beat yourself up, I only got 14 of 19. Two or three were inexcusable, like calling a MOPAR 360 instead of a 440 (I just knew they were trying to trick me with the obvious answer, so I fooled myself into a wrong answer).

At least they got some relevant Ford questions.

Tip: Always look at the valve covers when suspecting FE's, they partially overlap the intake manifold (as the pushrods actually run through holes in the manifold and not just the heads).

Allright I've got a pretty good quiz for ya's....

There's this car that is frequently parked down by the local downtown square and it's usually around the back of some restaurant as if driven by someone who works there. I've walked by it a couple times and gawked at it trying to figure out what it was, and even have run into other folks doing the same thing and we all have our theories & guesses... the Pontiac Belvedere is frequently brought up as a guess, as is the early Dodge Coronet. All the badging has been stripped off, so there are very few clues as to make or model. Whatever it is, it is a stylin' machine! Even my son was diggin' the body lines and totally cool reverse-slant rear windows.

This time around I had my new cell phone with me and snagged some pix. With a good reference at hand I was able to finally determine what it is, although it still wasn't easy for me. So now it's your challenge.

Who can guess the year, make, and model of this car?

Here's a quick walkaround:

Other than the general styling, the only other clue is this dude/dudette/entity hangin' out on the C-pillar trim:

So what is it?

Ahh...monochromatic grills and bumpers way before their time. Wink

...and not just because of the badge. Merc's had that stoopid rear sloping window of which a section electrically raised/lowered (hey, this was before air conditioning was standard). I recall the TV commercial demonstrated the benefits of this feature being some 12 year old boy (possibly Stoopy) throwing a football that passed harmlessly through the open window into the car. I think these were around '61`-'65, but probably not that long.

And here you go, "Mercury, sucking carbon monoxide fumes into the car to smother your little girl since 1963!"

www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjLKZ7LIhG0

Yep, a little CO will put little Suzie right to sleep...no more annoying "Are we there yet?" harping...

Razz

(the 460 with six barrel carburation does sounds appealing, though)

My Grandfather had the Lincoln Continental version of that car. He bought it used from a friend. It was a great car for road trips. Back when they made cars wide enough to sit 3 people (or even 4! Shocked ) comfortably. And the retractable rear window was a fantastic feature

When my dad's business took off, he bought a giant 1970 Conti. I borrowed it on a couple of "social occasions" after I'd sold my car before going in the army. Road trips and seating 3-4 wide wasn't all it was good for. Wink

This great beast here...

When I was in high school, he had a '67 Buick Electra 225 (aka, a "deuce and a quarter"). It also had a bench seat to die for.

No doubt it's a Mercury Monterey. My Uncle had one back when I was a 'youngster'... Wink

Oh man I LOVE that commercial, thanks Ascout!!!! I was showing my son how back in the day people were allowed NOT to wear seatbelts, and little Susy could crawl out on the trunk lid if she wanted to....great stuff!

Yep it's indeed a '66 Merc Monterey according to my research as well, Although, it could also be a 1966 Merc Park Lane Breezeway as well, for some reason that name also delivers an exact match in terms of body style and trim.

Bench seats? Hell yeah! The upholstery in the front was shot and covered with a blanket but the back seat was VERY nice and kind of an almost paisley blue.

Speaking of Mercury commercials...

It's get a lot better at about 0:38.

While 428 CJ's and other FE engines larger than the 390 were supplied, fewer than 1000 Cougars got 'em. I forgot the actual production numbers for the 427 (which was very expensive to produce), but I think it doesn't exceed a couple hundred or so. They could only be had with automatics, however.

Here's a nice example...

Something didn't sound right about that commercial and I believe the announcer is actually mentioning a 406 c.i. engine option, which made me scratch my head but it turns out there really was such a beast for a couple of years based on the "Gen 2" FE motor....there's a nice shot of the tri-power setup on it as well too:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...engine#406

(also, just below that - Cammer Porn!!! Razz )

This is turning out to be an incredibly educational thread!

We love the original 390 BTW. We had a '69 Galaxie with one and also a '67 T-Bird with one. I learned to drive in the 'Bird and when it was aimed down any long steep straight downgrade (not difficult to find on the high desert) the combination of torque from that 4bbl big block and the effect of gravity pulling on the porky ~4800lb curb weight produced some serious acceleration. Getting it slowed down at the bottom of the hill on bias-ply tires was another story though. Smile

Getting it slowed down at the bottom of the hill on bias-ply tires was another story though. Smile

The 406 Ford was fundamentally a race motor made available for the street before the 427 was introduced. It most famously turned up in the Starliner series before it morphed into the "boxtop Galaxies" that most often had 427's in 'em. A variation was also found in the Thunderbird of the time, as you can see by the valve covers.

When I was 12-14, some of my family with one of the larger tobacco farms had a notoriously pairing of boys (out of eleven children total) one of which had a red 1961 Starliner with a breathed on 406 with the three deuces that only left the chickenhouse (one of those long ones for raising lots of chickens) at night. I finally put this together as I reached about 13. Laughing

It was an interesting car, that also had a 45 RPM record player under the dash. Not that it tracked all that well over what were mostly unpaved roads back in the day. I understand that car is still locally owned but hasn't been seen in a long time.

I had a '63 Galaxy Coupe with a 406 and three 'deuces'. Wink I traded it for a 66 Galaxy convertible with a 428... AND in those days, I wouldn't own anything if it didn't have a 4 speed... As most here will say, I wish I would/could have kept those cars, but young family and moving towards everyday life expenses made me go for the more practical models such a 66 Dodge Charger with a 383 and *cough cough* automatic trans (That's the family part)...lol

Never apologize for a Torque-Flite transmission. It was and is one of the best performance autos ever put behind a big engine, including Hemi's. IME, most street Hemi's performed beter with the Torque-Flite than the 4-sp cars.

On the track, with big tires, 'nuther story.

Man I love hearing this stuff!

I would dig seeing where that '61 Starliner is today, and wonder what the trunk looks like? I'd imagine its had a far share of 'embalming fluid' spilled in it, either preserving it or eating the metal away, I don't know which....

Galaxies of most any year have a soft spot in my heart. Would be great to see some photos of your '63 if you have any, Bushy.

And some of those old commercials are a real friggin' hoot. If you don't mind a quick detour into GM-land this one in particular for the '64 Buick Wildcat was a real side-splitter, considering the response it would get if aired today...no LULAC members around here I hope...

Impalas?

IMPALAS?!!

WE DON' NEED NO STEENKING IMPALAS!!!!!!!

And it looks like the guy at 0:37 is taking out his sectional frustrations on the poor shifter...
