If we're facing crises like this, can a zombie apocalypse be very far off?!

Bacon shortage worldwide 'unavoidable' UK pig group says
Might want to get your fill of ham this year, because "a world shortage of pork and bacon next year is now unavoidable," according to an industry trade group.

Blame the drought conditions that blazed through the corn and soybean crop this year. Less feed led to herds declining across the European Union "at a significant rate," according to the National Pig Association in Britain.

And the trend "is being mirrored around the world," according to a release. The announcement was first reported in the Financial Times.

In the second half of next year, the number of slaughtered pigs could fall 10%, doubling the price of European pork, according to the release.

The trade group urged supermarkets to pay pig farmers a fair price for the meat to help cover the drought-related losses.

In U.S. warehouses, pork supply soared to a record last month, rising 31% to 580.8 million pounds at the end of August from a year earlier, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The surge came as farmers scaled down their herds as feeding the animals became increasingly expensive.

The sordid story here...

See this is exactly the kind of crude, uncivilized and inconsiderate thinking that gets me all riled up. Shortage of delicious, savory, toothsome, mouth-watering warm crispy bacon or not, I object to us being treated like we're some kinda dang commodity!!!!

And I have it on good authority that in the southeastern wilds of the North American continent, wild hogs are thriving.... Wink

Texas feral hog population outnumbers people in most cities
Hog Wild in Texas

With an estimated 1.5 million in Texas alone, feral hogs surpass all Texas city populations, except Houston, for state bragging rights, said wildlife and fisheries specialist Dr. Billy Higginbotham at a Texas A&M University extension center in Overton.

But don't think of Babe, the pink farm pig who talked his way through two feature films. These dark and furry hogs are known to nearly every Texas county, except the extreme western portions of the state, and are notorious for tearing up land, destroying crops and causing land erosion.

"They're kind of a pest," said Drew Ryser, a hunter. "They tear up the ground; the underbrush is torn up and they breed like crazy."

Nationwide, Higginbotham estimates the feral hog population at more than 2 million, but said the exact population is impossible to track.

"We simply do not have an accurate means to count them and therefore these estimates are just that--estimates," he said.

Has anyone noticed this guy hanging around the jG300 Pig Sty? He seems entirely too conversant about our landing skills and off-duty activities for it to be just coincidence...
