T-28 & T95
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

"And one could point out that neither McDonnell nor Douglas are still around"

Lets see Vought isn't around, neither is Convair (well I guess as you put it 'buried in the bowels of Lockheed Martin' :-)) Lockheed & Martin have merged (and neither produce airplanes in the location they originally did) Republic is gone, North American disapeared in the bowels of somebody, Northrup & Grumman have merged but are hardly 'aircraft companies' anymore.

So who exactly are left?

Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, General Dynamics, and (at least potentially) Northrup-Grumman? Any others?

(Actually, on a whim i entered www.vought.com into my browser.....and they still exist! Although they no longer seem to build complete aircraft, anymore.....)

(Obligatory armour content: General Dynamics makes (or made, at least) the M1 Abrams tank.)

GD isn't in the airplane business. The old GD plant and F-16 production line is part of Lockheed Martin now (and has been for several years).

Vought became Ling Temco Vought (LTV Aerospace) for awhile and at one point they were a big steel producer.

I think Boeing and Lockheed Martin are it in the US for fixed wing military aircraft

Post subject: Re: T-28 & T95

There is an entire website & discussion list - yes, an entire group - dedicated solely to US Military Aviation Designations:

www.designation-system...index.html

However, the historical development of the US Army ground vehicle numbering system is a LOT more complicated. I will post my updated listing tonight.

Thank you for posting those lists. I copied and saved them, and they should prove very useful.

Thank you for updating my old and faulty information. I learn something new every time i come here.

On a tangentially related subject, i recently read that the Russian government is planning on merging Sukhoi, Mikoyan, Ilyushin, Irkut, Tupolev, and Yakovlev and forming a new company named "United Aircraft Corporation".

And the few become fewer.....

'I'm still looking for the F-6, F-7 and F-10 (The F-7 is a very interesting story)'

Is everyone ready for the answer to this one or should we wait to see if any of the flyboys drop in and want to take a shot at it?

You can find that at:

The F-7 was the Sea Dart, redesignated from F2Y.

Hey Neil! Hi Folks!

Great lists! Thank you!

"M151 Jeep 3/4-ton Military Utility Tactical Truck (MUTT) (1960)"

"M152 3/4-ton Ambulance Truck"

Question. Shouldn't those two be 1/4 ton vehicles? Shocked

How long have you been working on those lists? Surprised

Sgt, Scouts Out! Smile

The F-6 was the F4D Skyray a very good maybe great fighter for it's time
The F-7 was the Convair F2Y Sea Dart, a Jet seaplane fighter. The interesting thing about it was that it had been cancelled over 5 years before the redesignation took place and all three of the survivors had already been retired. I have never seen an official reason given that explains why it was included in the numbering scheme. I beleive they used it as a way of using the F-7 designator so the Crusader could be the F-8, and the Grumman cats the F-9 and F-11 ( previous F9F and F11F)
The F-10 was the the F3D Skynight a big two seat side by side night fighter. It was still in the inventory with the Marines who were using it as an ECM/ECCM bird. Since the McDonnell F3H Demon got the F-3 designater the geriatric F3D was used to fill a number that should have gone to cat in the Grumman line that had never made it out of test. The F3D was also somewhat unique in how a crew bailed out in an emergency. Instead of ejection seats there were bailout slides that sent the crew out the bottom of the aircraft

Must be an error/typo that crept in, thanks.

I found this list a day ago! It has what might be called a glaring fault in that it doesn't list the WW2 Deuce because that wasn't an 'M' series vehicle. As I looked through the 1215 vehicles listed I saw some of what I drove in the late 50s (M211 Deuce and M62 5 Ton wrecker) but searched in vain for other items (M135 Deuce). Here's a few sites to look at to review a few more "Army' vehicles:

3-12-2009
1) This list doesn’t include the LeTourneau land train
books.google.com/books...t#PPA66,M1

tinyurl.com/cp6s74

2) Or the LARV or BARC vehicles
www.amphibiousvehicle..../barc.html

3) Or the GMC CCKW WW2 Deuce
die-cast-army.over-blo...82215.html
www.cckw.org/

Studebaker or Int’l Harvester
www.cybermodeler.com/h...5511.shtml

4) Variations of the “Jimmie” as Fire Service vehicles
www.firetrucks-atwar.com/
