Wrecks and relics in the USA
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Why does the gov't spend so much money on spy satelites when there is GOOGLE_EARTH

(Do you have a time stamp on that photo?, the 'Pink Panther' photo in another thread was taken at least 21 years ago!)

And it's even closer to the S-I-L!!

Oh, you must be pulling our legs...?

The US government did pay for all those birds! IKONOS is the last of the Keyhole series. It was reassigned as part of the famous peace dividend. A lot of Google Earth is from Space Imaging. The rest they've filled in with misc coverage from GOK (ie God Only Knows).

Declassified multispectral images are available from all Remote Sensed Imagery agencies (from India to Russia and Brazil) to anyone with an end user agreement and a bank account. But nothing on Google Earth has metadata which makes it instantly suspect.

I'll bet its listed in Rob Griffin's book, I'll have to look it up tonight.

There are a few tanks listed in Griffin's book as being in the USA, and many listed without a fate, but I couldnt find anything specifically referring to this one. But I have e-mailed Rob to see what he knows.

Here in Bowling Green, Kentucky there is an M60 (not sure which model, but probably M60A1) parked in front of the local VFW post along with a WW2 vintage M5 3" antitank gun. Both are currently wearing desert sand paintwork. The gun has been there as long as I can remember, the tank at least 10 years or more.

The local Legion post used to have an M26 Pershing, but it was removed many years ago.

ABERDEEN, MARYLAND
Army base - Ordnance museum:
Leopard 1 DEU 10586/T36 pre, ex Cologne (DEU) apr05

Where did you find the serial info? I believe this is a Leo 1 prototype...

If I remember correctly I got the serial from a forum, could be very well the old AFV forum. It is indeed a prototype.

M4 Sherman USA 16917 pre aug05

Has experimental HVSS suspension

M4A1 Sherman FRA std, ex Mannheim (DEU)? dec05

Last owner was the USA Army, as monument in Europe. But France probably was the last "user."

Yes, I list the last user, otherwise it is even more difficult with privatly owned tanks etc.

PzKpfw IV ausf.F2 DEU pre may04
PzKpfw IV Thoma DEU pre dec03

Not sure which one this is...

There is the PzKpfw IV Ausf FG mit hydrostatischen Antrieb at the museum and an Ausf D/E/F (mix?) on the new Mile of Tanks..

One (the sectionalized one) is a Model 1945. Why do you say one is from Germany? Since they both arrived in '51, I suspect they came from Korea...

There is also a JS-3M, from Egypt by way of Israel... I guess Egypt would be the last "user."

Both corrected

Neil

Fort Lewis in the state of Washington, not Washington DC - you got me excited there for a minute!

Neil[/quote]

Didn't know, Is corrected. The Sherman in Nokesville could indeed be a vehicle from the VMMS

Very interesting... This is the first I have heard of an MBT-70 at Fort Polk... Whats the basis for your info? Any pics? Anyone else have any info on this, can confirm or deny?

Neil

Also corrected, no MBT70

...is not in San Diego, or even close. El Monte is actually in East Los Angeles, lest someone take a wrong turn into the wrong neighborhood.

Yes, you wrote this earlier on, but I forgot to correct. Know I have done it immediately!

L

An excellent listing.

Just a few notes.

PzKpfw V Panther A DEU pre mar05
PzKpfw V Panther G DEU std oct05
PzKpfw V Panther II DEU 120417 pre, with ausf.G turret oct05

Shocked (I wish...!!)
We only have 2 Panthers here currently. The Panther 'G' & Panther II.

T28 USA pre jul04
T95 USA std jul04

This is the same vehicle, a double listing. Only two were built but only one exists. Wink

The M60 #75 is not a training tank, it is one of the original batch made at the Newark Delaware plant by Chrysler.

The XM-1 at Fort Campbell KY is the Chrysler (NOT GM) Diesel variant.

I have some other corrections for your list and will send you the updates when I get more time. Your list has helped me with my M60 quest, unfortunately it will have to be put on hold for a while

Last time (boy must be going on 7 years now) I was at the Presidio in San Francisco there was a M41 on the grounds near the base museum. Need to get back up there someday.
