Is this an M728 CEV?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Yet another "Tanks for the Memories" geocaching pic. The barrel is exceptionally long...

It looks like something stuck in the demolition gun to make it look more "tank-like". Doesn't look quite centered on enlargment.

Hi Neil! Hi Folks!

That is a M728 CEV! Maybe the 165mm Demo gun was removed as part of the de-miling process. If the 165 is still there, then I agree with Doug. Someone added some pipe to make it look like a tank.

Something like this poor Stuart.

My 2 cents,
Sgt, Scouts Out! Smile

Howdy,
More than likely the gun and mount was removed, The Army has kept a lot of those guns complete for possible future use. Kinda like the M2 Tank Turret .50 cal with M10 Charger from the old M48's that eventually got used again on the M1/M1A1's. Would be real easy to cover the opening with a plate and put a manlet cover over it. I guess whoever did it didn't know what a real CEV looks like.

Well it comes from the Stuart 'clan' Rolling Eyes I hesitate to use the name Scott with the M8. It's one of those names that seemed to pop up long after the vehicle was 'past it's prime'

Somewhat like Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil 'Gavin' Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

That is the 11th ACR base camp in Vietnam, late 1970, early 1971, just before the Regiment stood down.

My guess is that vehicle was found some were in Vietnam by the 11th. Someone painted it, used part of a 55 gallon oil barrel to make a mantle, and used some pipe to make a gun barrel. No idea what happiened to it when the Regiment stood down. I don't think they would have left it there and I don't think they took it with them sense the colors where going into storage. The 11th ACR didn't replace the 14th ACR in Gemany until after the 2nd Sqdn stood down over a year later. My guess would be it was taken to the Long Binh Depot and sold as scrap metal. Crying or Very sad

Sgt, Scouts Out! Sad

P.S. About that name Scott. I agree with Bob. The first time I heard that name used with the M8s was after I joined this DG. I have yet to see any thing in print using that name that has a copywrite older than the 1990s.

Scott Confused = Gavin Evil or Very Mad = Lingle Rolling Eyes

Well, I guess that pretty much rules out the Product Improved M113A1/765 as the "Gavin-Lingle". Sad

I don't mind local names being assigned to items (vehicles, planes, etc) as long as we remember where the name came from. Occasionally a local name will catch on and stick Warthog for the A-10, Aardvark for the F-111 (which never had an official name that I know of).

I actually dislike the recent trend in Airplane names. The F-35 (That designator is a travesty in itself) is now officially 'Lightning II' which followed 'Globemaster III', 'Thunderbolt II', and 'Phantom II' At least the Phantom reused a name originally assigned to a low volume, almost test bed jet fighter so the name had no 'history' already. At least the Thunderbolt II came out of the old Republic lineage. The F-35 bears no relation to the old Lockheed Lightning other than 'related through corporate merger'.

Of course let us not forget why the F-16 is the 'Fighting Falcon' instead of just the 'Falcon' like the Air Force originaly attempted to name it.

So I will continue to use the Lingle on this board and sneer at Twisted Evil Gavin Twisted Evil

I may recognize that some folks use Scott for the M8 and Jackson for the M36 but will also try to keep their use from becoming 'normal'

I've heard of the M-36 "Jackson", I've heard of the M-113 "Gavin" Rolling Eyes , I've even heard of the "Lingle" Shocked , but I've never heard of the M8 referred to as the "Scott". Who is "Scott"?

There was General Winfield Scott of Mexican War Fame and the creator of the 'Anaconda Plan to defeat the Confederacy. Although naming a light vehicle after him would be somewhat of a joke.

When I worked at Defense Depot Anniston Alabama we had several 165mm guns with mounts stored in our warehouse. Guess they saved some of them for future use.
