Ft Hood Korea Park and 105mm Howitzer....
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I've posted the pictures of the M4, M26, and M24 that sit on this Korea War Memorial site, at the corner of the 1st Cav parade field. Well these pictures show the actual monument and the M105mm Howitzer. Howitzer is dated 1942, serial number 3594. You should be able to read the breech area so I wont repeat what it says. Enjoy!

Another nice one from Jeff!

The old 105 was one of the most successful weapons that the US deployed, but it's just not as appreciated as the M1 rifle or as "sexy" as a tank. Deployed starting in 1940 (after a lengthy development that was halted by the depression), the 105 was the standard infantry divisional artillery weapon from WW2 through Korea, and corps-level battalions supplied reinforcing fires. A very common weapon in Vietnam, too, with bothe the US and ARVN forces.

I have a special spot for the 105mm howitzer as my dad served in a 105 Bn in the NE ArNG until moving up into adminisatrive posts. The Guard used to keep a 105 around as a salute gun for many years later.

The M2 (later M101, but I don't know if there was much difference) howitzer soldiered on in a lot of Nat'l Guard artillery units until the early 90's. I don't know it they were replaced with M102s (or the newer 105 piece) or if the units were upgraded to 155 at that time.

There are a lot of them in monuments and as gate guards, all over the US. I took a ton of pics of a pair at a memorial park in northern Michigan a few years back.
