Interesting FMS announcement - 600 Infantry "LAVs" for Iraq
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

No, I didnt accidentally add a 0 there, 600...

These could well be Canadian LAVs (not Strykers), since the US does have FMS authority for those through the Marine Corps program.

FMS LAVs

No indication what gen though, or they could just be Textron ASV APCs:

Defense Security Cooperation Agency
NEWS RELEASE
On the web: www.dsca.mil Media/Public Contact: (703) 601-3670
Transmittal No. 06-69
Iraq - Helicopters, Vehicles, Weapons and Support
Washington, September 19, 2006 - The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Iraq of helicopters, vehicles, weapons and support as well as associated equipment and services. The total value, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $500 million.
The Government of Iraq has requested a possible sale of the following weapons:
10,126 M17 9mm Glock Pistols
50,750 M16A2 Rifles
50,750 M4A1 Rifles
3,442 M24 Sniper Rifles
8,105 M249 Machine Guns
3,037 M240B Machine Guns
1,268 Generation (Gen) II Single Tube Night Vision Goggles
15 AN/PVS-17 Gen III Assault Weapon Sights
40 AN/PVS-10 Gen II Sniper Weapon Sights
20 Mi-17 Troop Transport Helicopters
600 Infantry Light Armored Vehicles Armored Personnel Carriers
2,126,250 9mm Pistol Ammunition
35,437,500 5.56mm Rifle Ammunition
633,328 7.62mm Sniper Rifle Ammunition
1,621,000 5.56mm Machine Gun Ammunition
1,214,800 M240 7.62mm Crew Served Machine Gun Ammunition
9,562 Hand Held Pyrotechnics and
8,670 Hand Held Smoke Munitions.
Also included: logistics support services/equipment for helicopters (Jet Ranger, Huey II and Mi-17) and vehicles (Standard/Non-Standard Wheeled Vehicles, Tracked Vehicles, Infantry Light Armored Vehicles Armored Personnel Carriers) and small/medium weapons and weapon systems, on-job-training, laser pointers, supply and maintenance support, measuring and hand tools for ground systems, technical support, software upgrades, spare and repair parts, support equipment, publications and documentation, personnel training and training equipment, U.S. Government and contractor engineering and logistics support services, and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $500 million.
This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country. This proposed sale directly supports the Iraqi government and serves the interests of the Iraqi people and the U.S., as well as offering hope for a more stable and peaceful Middle East.
The Government of Iraq has an assortment of multiple makes of antiquated vehicles with some new vehicles provided under the Multi-National Security Transition Command. The multiple makes of antiquated vehicles are difficult and costly to maintain. The modernization plan calls for purifying the fleet with more capable equipment and services to sustain equipment. The troop helicopter carries will allow the Iraqis to rapidly move troops into position. Also, the aircraft will provide the capability to medical evacuate casualties. Leadership, tactical and technical training is needed to develop a professional Iraqi Armed Forces.
The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not affect the basic military balance in the region.
The contractors are unknown at this time. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.
Implementation of this sale may require the assignment of up to 69 contractor representatives to execute the maintenance program for a duration up to 24 months. There will be up to 11 contractors to field and train Iraqi personnel on operating the equipment and maintenance for 8 months.
There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.
This notice of a potential sale is required by law; it does not mean that the sale has been concluded.

Ah! I've got a thought! They probably don't mean 'LAV' per se but simply light armored vehicles. You may recall Textron Land & Marine had secured a hefty contract for turretless lengthened-body M1117 'Guardians' (does anybody actually call them by that name?). Now that the New Orleans M1117 manufacturing facility is back up & running that may be the vehicle order they're referring to.

An alternate theory is they may be quickly purchasing some off-the-shelf vehicle like Pandur to fill the void. But I'd bet money they're talking about the lengthened M1117.

Actually, you probably have a point in that $500M certainly cant buy you 600 LAVs ($1-2M each), let alone 600 LAVs + all that other stuff.

As I'm sure all readers of this board are well aware, BAE and Force Protection Inc. (FPI) were awarded a contract for 378 Iraqi Light Armored Vehicles (ILAV) that are variants of the Cougar that FRI produces for the US Army and Marines. The Not to Exceed number of vehicles that can be ordered off of the contract is 1,050.

The 600 vehicles mentioned will be ILAV's, which 50% will be produced at BAE facilities (under license from FPI) and the other 50% in Ladson, SC by FPI.

All support, maintenance and spares will be provided by FPI.

If you're not familiar with these guys, I suggest you drop by www.forceprotectioninc.com.

You'll also see what they're doing with their flagship "Buffalo" and the newest entry in Mine Protected vehicles, the "Cheetah" (soon to be on a battlefield near you)

The Cheetah has an excellent shot at being named as the replacement for the HUMVEE. This is one awesome vehicle.

Zippy, thanks for the info. I'm from the Charleston area and know Force Protection (or Technical Solutions Group as they used to be called) from before 9-11. Back then they were happy just to get an order for a dozen or so vehicles. Now they're doing runs in the hundreds!

Go back and read the first message - the Infantry/Iraq Light Armoured Vehicles are mentioned, in addition to the Light Armoured Vehicles, further down the page.

Oops sorry - I should have mentioned that I had read the full version of that contract/proposal rather than the summary in the first message.
