Unknown M-1917 6-ton tank
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

A interesting thing I noticed is that with the exception of this one tank I cannot find another pic of a M1917 without the lifting hooks. I've looked at all of P-O's PDf's and no FT17 has the hooks but all the M1917 except this one do have the hooks. I assume the hooks were needed to load aboard ship. Any ideas anyone? Maybe hooks removed during restoration, seems like a lot of trouble. Any ideas anyone?

As Neil says, there is some controversy over 'FT-18', in fact even 'FT-17'. The French apparently only ever used the term FT, and allocating model numbers (to represent 1917 and 1918) has been done since so is not 'official'. In any case, they only apply to French vehicles, the US one is M1917 (no 'FT').

The FT-18 designation appeared in french military publications in the early 1920s and appears to only relate to the vehicles fitted with the Berliot cast turret with central doors.

My personal opinion is that was a public relations exercise designed to make those vehicles appear to be newer so that they could be sold to foreign armies more easily...

So is this an FT-17? This is the picture that got my curiosity going Smile

Thats a fake turret I suspect and fitted to the hull of a radio version - which would expalin the lack of lifting hooks.

Any other photos of this particular vehicle?

Jim That's a new thought, that could explain the lack of hooks, has anyone done any research on these or this tank? A friend sent me this pic

Keep in mind the Wheaton M1917 was supposedly "assembled from parts found in Canada" - so I wouldnt be surprised if it is missing some parts, and/or has at least partially been mocked up...

Seems like we're all now pretty much in agreement.

And we can't have that!

How about a fun one to throw in the mix:

I believe this one is a Krasnoye Sormovo aka KS
at Kubinka and maybe somewhat a replica...

I'll venture a wild guess,......

Perhaps this is a 'sister' to the two found in Afghanistan. Courtesy of a 'gift' to the 'White' Russians during the revolution, from the US Govt. ??

Seperated as part of the USSRs 'gift' to Afghanistan, in recognition of being the first country to officially recognize the 'newly' formed Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR).

Is that a BIG SWAG or what?

Armyjunk2 is right - it's the KS at Kubinka. I was aiming just to remind people that 'sexing' an FT lookalike isn't just about whether it was made in France or the US. I could have also thrown in an Italian Fiat 3000:

Yes, the KS at Kubinka is reputed to be partly a replica. It is also painted to represent the original prototype which it almost certainly wasn't. I read recently an interesting suggestion that in fact the KS is not a Soviet copy of the FT17, as has been claimed, but simply a rebuild of French built chassis. In other words, there is no true 'KS', just more FT.
