A hard days work on the Sd Kfz 223
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: A hard days work on the Sd Kfz 223

Hey all

Here a little tidbit of todays 'work day' on the Sd Kfz 223 (funk).

1) De-mil Welds removed on Crew access doors, engine access doors, antenna support brackets, all vision ports, and fender storage boxes. All the doors and view ports open and close. The antenna lifting mechanism is functional.

2) Additionally the (4) turret guides/bearings were removed, repaired, and remounted.

3) The low profile turret was then mounted on the vehicle.



Hint: All this 'first ever' work has a goal for the end of May...... Mr. Green

I was researching another topic on the AWM collections database and found this one



An abandoned German Sd Kfz 223, Leichter Panzerspahwagen (light armoured car) which has been captured by advancing allied troops in North Africa. The vehicle has been fitted with a folding frame antenna for use with a long range wireless set which is fitted inside the vehicle. Three German 5 cm Panzerabwehrkanone 38 (Pak 38 anti tank guns) are visible in the background. ID Number: P05342.015

We have most of the antenna, onhand. Hope to have it mounted w/ some fabrication/repair soon.

The turret we have had no 'grenade screen' so some fabrication is ongoing to have that replaced.

The hopes are to display a completed vehicle, cosmetically restored, 'soon'. A first ever for the museum. This vehicle has not been as complete since it was captured in 1944/45.

Thought these might be of interest as well, all via the AWM







Fishermen's bend, vic. 1942-07. A german patrol and reconnaissance scout car, captured by a.i.f. troops in libya, and brought to australia for inspection by armament experts. The driver is fully protected by armour-plating and only the hands of the observers pretrude above the turret. Heavy soil springs at front and rear ensure a reasonably comfortable ride for the crew.

A great work has been done on this vehicle. For sure the volunteers at Fort Knox provide a really good restoration job.

Today I had the chance to see a similar vehicle :

This gallery shows the SdKfz 221 located at Roscoff, Britanny, France.

This vehicle was previously part of the 39-45 Museum in Roscoff (France), which closed its doors recently.

This vehicle was recovered by a mechanic shortly after the war, from the area of Sizun, in Britanny (France), where it was left by the German army in 1944. The mechanic infortunately cut into the armour and removed many armour parts of the vehicle. In the 1970s, the vehicle was bought by the owner of the Roscoff 39-45 museum, who restored it. The missing armour parts were replaced with new steel plates, but the chassis was very complete.
The entire museum was sold to a collector who lives near Vermelles (Northern France).

Vehicle from Roscoff more looks like SdKfz 223 late series. SdKfz 221 have different hull.
