Thun: Panzers
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Panther:

Jagdpanther:

Jagdpanzer IV:

Hetzer:

The Pz IV has never been in a great shape. Parts are missing and crude replicas used instead. Among other things, a few wheels belong to a Pz III and idler wheel on the right is different than the one from the left.

Massimo,
Do you have more shots/views? I, in particular, who like to see more shots of the Panther and the Pz IV. Do you know, what is the history of these vehicles? The previous post on the Sherman you had asked something in re: the paint/markings?
thanks,
SR

The info available on the museum say that both the Panther and Pz IV came from France after WW II.

I have around 90 shots of the Panther and 110 of Pz IV. I can put them into a zip file and make it available from my website for a few days.

As for the Sherman, I was curious to know if that one still has the original paint/marking.

BTW If you are into Pz IV, the pictures below were taken in Lesany, back in 1998. Later on this Pz IV was restored to look more "german", back when I took these pictures instead it was still in the configuration used by Czechslovakia after WW II, then by Syria.

Pierre-Olivier's PDF on Pz IV contains a picture of the same Pz IV after restoration.

Don't forget you can look them all up at PreservedTanks.com. Here's are some examples:

Panther: www.preservedtanks.com...p;Select=1
Pz IV: www.preservedtanks.com...p;Select=1
Jagdpanzer: www.preservedtanks.com...p;Select=1

Picture on the page above still show Thun's Panther with an old paintjob. Pictures dating 2006 already display the current paintjob.

BTW Trevor. I see you are missing Thun's Pz IV picture on your website. I would be more than glad to send you a few and let you pick one as you see fit.

Yes, it's a few years since I visited. I have a bit of a backlog putting pictures online and am currently working through my Normandy ones. So yes, I would be very interested in any pictures you have (of Thun, Fall, etc.) but it will be a little while before I get them online.

The Thun Panther is an enigma. It is either a D or early A hull. The turret is most likely a mid/late production A or early G turret. What throws most people off is the replica mantlet, vaguely resembling a late G mantlet.

It's a Panther A, just with a rebuilt/replacement mantlet.

Jeff, clearly I have designated it as a D so I would be interested in your reasoning for it being an A.

You're right mate, I didn't see the letterbox flap in the shadow of the barrel. But it's clearly not a D turret as you mentioned as well.

Massimo, what is your website address, I would like to check out the pictures. I wouldnt think that the original paint and markings would survive this long, although not showroom it is in too good a condition to be the original WW2 paint job... and it doesnt look like it has all of the vehicle markings that it should....

good discussion

Rikard, I would say is a modified D or an early A turret (Thun vehicle has pistol port and loading port at the turret rear-- a D feature).
It isnt truly a D turrret, no pistol ports and/or side loading port, although it has a pistol port on the rear of the turret in the same locations as a D turret (why? dont know-- modified D turret?)... it has an A cupola, but many D's were upgraded later. That mantlet... I am wondering how much of this they cobbled together to make it a museum piece. speculation...
But I am glad they have it! Glad they put it together to get this. It is a jigsaw puzzle, still a nice piece of history

Shawn, I don't have a website dedicated to AFVs (hint: not yet!).

In the meantime you can grab the pictures from here:

Panther (5.6 Mb)

Panzer IV (7.3 Mb)

I will keep those files online for a few days, then remove them.

Hope it will help
