Kurt Laughlin - Saumur's M8 HMC serials
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Kurt Laughlin - Saumur's M8 HMC serials

Hello,

I was at Saumur last week and finally, found the serial numbers for 2 of the 3 M8 HMCs that are preserved at Saumur.

Here is the first one, which is on display inside the museum, beside a Chaffee and a LVT-4. I can read "Serial no A-1436 :

The other one, which is stored outside at the back of the museum, is in a very sorry condition. However, the still original markings show the nickname "Thèbes" (this is for sure a marking from the French Army, maybe 2nd French Ard. Division?). The SN is "Serial No A-678".

I will publish soon other photos + serials, for M47 Pattons and Chaffees maybe. I also got the chance to visit the reserves, so I will do and pûblish a complete listing of what is in the buildings..

P-O

Good work, P-O. There's a vehicle that needs some love.

Do you live close to Saumur?

Trevor,

to answer to your question, yes I live closer since a very short time. I left Eastern France for Western France.

Are you interested in a CD with all my pictures from Saumur ?

P-O

Thanks Pierre-Oliver!

For some reason The M8s used an A- prefix to their serials. A678 was from February 1943, A1436 from August 1943.

Note that M8s had the rear deck "guard rails" even when the rear stowage box was not fitted. BTW, does the museum M8 have the rails and/or rear box?

well, I don't have the time to sort all the recent pictures yet, but until 1 month, a CD will be ready for you.
