The article also says there were very few actual lightning strikes on the plane. I remember the Flier article mentioning hundreds.

NASA article cites 714 strikes in 1,496 T-storm penetrations.

I was looking at the Homestead Article when I said that. The NASA article agrees more with what I remember but it seems rather vague on dates

Bob,

Yep, I remember the EC-135 fire. They evacuated the Commissary (old one) and the surrounding areas when it started. Was a real mess. That Bird ended up being parked here (37.093383,-76.363274) for a long time until they disposed of her.

On the subject of lightning, '98 I was in a Commercial Airliner returning from Germany and was struck just before landing at Hartsfield Atlanta. Looked like we were in a strobe light. Seen two Tanks get hit by lightning too. Both times in Kansas. In '87 M60A1 conducting gunnery, and in '93, M1A1, my wing man, during an FTX. Damaged the radio in the first, ruined the MILES gear in the second. That's all.
