Ontario trip report
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Ontario trip report

Following up on my last posting on Michigan, here are the results from my travels in Ontario this fall. Some of these numbers will just confirm what is already in the Register, but some are new and will help fill in some blanks. Naturally, I also took photos of each of the vehicles, and I have posted these to my Photobucket page. I will post results for Quebec later as I get it all organized. s698.photobucket.com/h.../allalbums

Ontario

Cornwall
M113 C&R Lynx, listed address is correct. As far as I know the serial numbers are not on the exterior of these vehicles. N45 01.476 W074 43.152

Sudbury
M4A2(76)HVSS, listed address is correct as far as mailing address goes, however, the short dead end street that leads off Weller and ends at the Legion Post has a sign reading “Legion Heights”. Serial number of the tank is 65076, clearly legible on the rear tow lugs.
N46 29.342 W080 56.906

Canadian Forces Base Petawawa
Base Museum N45 54.760 W077 17.380
ASU-57
Centurion Mk5
Ferret Mk1
M113 C&R Lynx
M4A2(76)HVSS, serial number 69185, painted “78-518”
M109A4
The above vehicles are all displayed outside the museum and can be seen anytime. At the time of my visit, the base was still open status, however, this can change anytime due to world events. There are also a large number of soft skins and towed artillery on display. Well worth a visit.

Main gate, Menin Rd. N45 54.375 W077 17.268
M4A2(76)HVSS, as listed, Serial number is 64966, painted “Worthy”
This vehicle can be seen on Google Street View.

At the turnoff from Hwy 17 (Trans Canada Hwy) onto Hwy 55, which leads to the main gate.
M4A2(76)HVSS, serial number 65241, painted “78-573”
This vehicle can be seen on Google Street View.

In comparing this list to the Register, it is clear that there has been some moving of vehicles since my last visit a few years ago, when I reported the positions and numbers.

Ottawa
Beechwood National Military Cemetery
M4A2(76)HVSS, serial number as listed is 69257. Painted “HUSAR 78-749”
N45 26.829 W075 39.567

Shirley’s Bay (so close to Ottawa, I think of it as a suburb, and list it under Ottawa)
Connaught Ranges Training Area
M4A2(76)HVSS, displayed at the corner of Shirley Blvd and Malibar Blvd just inside the east entrance to the training area. Serial number is 64944 and it is painted “TIMMY”.
M113 APC, displayed further inside the base on Bren Gun Rd.
The following are displayed at the edge of the range area on Shirley Blvd.
M113 C&R Lynx
Universal Carrier
AVGP Cougar

Now, the big one, Canadian War Museum, following is a list of the AFVs that I saw inside.

M4A4(75)VVSS Sherman, painted “Forceful III CT228619”
Autocar Machinegun Carrier

The museum must still have a storage facility elsewhere as I visited Vimy House storage warehouse in 1998 and photographed their LVT1, FV432, StuG3, and another M4A4 at that time. I didn’t see any of these during this visit to the new building.

Canadian Forces Base Borden Military Museum.
As luck would have it, the museum was closed when I was there, so I was only able to see the outside displays, which are as follows.
AVGP Cougar
M4A2(76)HVSS, serial number 64985
Centurion Mk5
Leopard C1 (1A3), painted “MILNER”
Ram 2, shop number 167

Hello Alf,
The T-55 at Borden, was that a normal T-55 or a T-55AM2?

Regards,
Lesley

Alf,

The Stug III is in an Italy diorama in Gallery 3 in CWM. And yes, CWM has many more vehicles in storage- there is discussion of swap of M4A4 hull with museum in Alberta.

The displays at Borden seem to be in regular movement- a number of the vehicles seem to go through the paint shop then show up elsewhere. There is ( or there was in May!) an M-48 just west of the Musem buildings but off the beaten path...

For L. Delsing,
Yes I believe the T55 at Borden is a T55AM2. Sorry, I should have called it that when I typed up the list.

For BruceClark,
Thanks for the note about the StuG 3 in the War Museum, somehow in my excitement, I must have missed it. Oh well, next time.

Ref the M48 in Borden. That's interesting, I have visited Borden and it's museum at least a dozen times over the years, since my first trip there as a young private in the 1970s, and I have never seen an M48 there. Do you happen to have a photo of it that you could post here (or Photobucket)? I'd love to see it. Thanks.

Hi Alf,

No Probs. I used to live in Barrie and started climbing over and under all the tanks and guns back at Borden in the 70's too. The place has changed an awful lot in the last couple of years and every time I go back something has moved or disappeared!

I misspoke- it is actually an M60A3 ( not that I knew initially), sn 2938A. I was surprised to see it there, too. Here is a photo from August '09.

Sorry Alf but I noted that you omitted the 2 M5A1's that flanked the Armoured Corps memorial. They were there in May.
Have they been moved?

Sorry, I guess I should have mentioned them in my list. They are still there in Worthington Park as always. I have seen them several times, checked the serial numbers and got all the photos I want so I didn't do any more than glance at them this time.
