More M47...Are you there Trevor?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi,

Took these a couple of days ago, here at Ft. Lewis (technically now known as Joint Base Lewis-McChord...I'm sticking with the old name).

The tank is sitting right across the street from Range Control on Main Post. The number "29" is stamped on both front tow eyes, and the rebuild plate is missing. The only other markings are the casting marks on the hull.

There has been a lot of movement of AFVs around Ft. Lewis recently. These (there is an M60...another post...and an M113 parked there also) are parked on the asphalt or right on the shoulder of the street. A lot of the vehicles that were in this or that HQs front yard now seem to be gone. A quick recce tonight discovered that some of them appear to be outside the (closed) museum.

Those of you that remember North Post? You no longer remember North Post. I haven't seen that much new and in-progress construction anywhere before in my life. Roads have been re-routed, closed, and created, and the entire street layout for a good bit of the northwestern area (where the old white WWII buildings predominated). Literally a dozen or more of new Battalion barracks blocks and new unit buildings have popped up in the three years since I was last here. Impressive, but dismaying if you are expecting something different!

Not a lot else to add...yes Trevor, you can use my pics.

Chuck

Is the the M47 with a welded-up or unfinished pistol port on the left side? I remember this was back on base ~2000 when I was out there. There were also two M4A1(76) tanks and an M728 about as far back as you could drive toward the range. The M47 was along this road, about half-way back.

Looks like this is the one:

I believe the M728 is now over outside the museum (pictures to follow, new and old), which I saw later last night. It's technically inside the construction fence...but an orange plastic fence is nothing in the face of my ninja skilz.

I've found two M4A176(W) on post. The North post one is VVSS, and the one on Stryker Ave (between Woodfill and S 22d St.) is HVSS. I posted both several years ago, but I'll put more up shortly. I've also discovered another M60 that I don't recall from before (could be wrong), on North post. I'll check that out this weekend and let you know what I discover.

Chuck

Great pictures! I got back from Scotland late last night (well, technically early this morning) so I'll get to work on these very soon. I also look forward to seeing any other pictures you have of tanks around the base.

Done! I have written up Fort Lewis and all its vehicles, and researched them all as best I could (including the 525 references to 'Lewis' on this forum!) so everyone please check this as I quote many of you. Chuck, I've included all your pictures (plus filled a few gaps with Wikimedia images).

Location ID 97100: Fort Lewis

Unique ID 1400: Fort Lewis M47

Chuck - can you give locations (GPS and/or street address) for the two memorials?

Any more information or pictures gratefully received from everyone.

All I remember about the post were about three buildings and a lot of fir trees. Arrived in the night, spent a day (of what was supposed to be five) for processing for exotic SEA location, and got shoved onto a Flying Tiger Airline 707 the middle of the next night so it wouldn't be flying the Pacific with any empty seats. FWIW, it appears this M47 Patton has a T42 pilot turret for some reason - discussed when I first posted pics a few years ago.

Neil, I had read that thread:

www.com-central.net/in...ic&t=11286

I took from Kurt's information about the turret part number that this was not a T42 turret, just an early design of M47 turret, and that's why I wrote the notes that way. In particular Kurt's notes indicate that the turret had serial number 73 which to me indicates it can't have been a T42 turret.

Hi Neil! Hi Trevor! Hi Folks!

- TrevorLarkum

Neil, I had read that thread:

www.com-central.net/in...mp;t=11286

Trevor, thanks for this link, looks like I missed this one.

Hey Neil!

In case it may make a difference to you, that M113 is not just another APC. That M113 had the M233 TOW missile system (see note below) installed inside it. That was the one where the TOW launcher popped up out of the cargo hatch area. Check out the base of the M2 HB 50 cal gun mount. The TOW missile carriers had a mount that would lay the M2 over onto it's side giving the TOW gunner more room to move the tube around when pointed out over the TC's hatch.

Anyone else notice that M113 is in danger of being destroyed?
At least from FTX point of view.

Spot Report!
Sgt, Scouts out!

Note: R.P. Hunnicutt's Bradley, page 178.
I hope Hunnicutt got this one right, if not then I am sorry for putting out more miss information. Sense I have a lot of time working with the M114 and M113 I though I would keep this one just for the pictures.
