M4A1(W)76mm - Ft. Lewis, WA
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi,

This Sherman was parked in the same place three summers ago, and doesn't appear to have had anything done to it in the meantime. It's in reasonable shape, and the engine (radial) is still in it. One of the hatches is open, and I was able to reach inside for some interior pics, which interior appears to be reasonably complete.

The turret has S/N 1885 cast into the side and top. Other than that, the only other markings I could find were on the bow casting:

I read them as 00818, with the Mfr mark (G in a stop sign) above to the left and "Lo -" below to the left. Maybe that means something to someone here?

Chuck

Pictures added, thanks Chuck:

Unique ID 1398: Fort Lewis M4A1 (76)

The 'G' marking indicates the transmission cover was made by American Steel Foundries, Granite Works, Illinois. I don't know the significance of the other parts of the marking:

Sherman Register - Foundry marks

Trevor,

one of the numbers is the part number (E8543 for a late-war 1-piece differential cover, E4186 for an earlier 1-piece one), the sequence with a letter and a number is the code for the mold (3B, 1C, 3C etc..) and the last number is the serial of the part (2, 3 or 4 numbers).

examples of E8543 differentials :

example of E4146 differential :

P-O, thanks, I've added that info to the entry and it will encourage me to start tracking differential serials.

Chuck, thanks for putting the tank's address into your photo album, that allowed me to track down its GPS location. That further prompted me to add a satellite view to each tank's profile page, a definite improvement to the site I think:

Unique ID 1398: Fort Lewis M4A1 (76)

If anyone can give me a location for the other Sherman, that would be much appreciated:

Stryker Avenue on the southwest edge of the airfield, between Woodkill and 22d. It sits between the two buildings on the west side of the road, back from the street.

I think there is a thread with recent pics I took a couple months ago. If not I have a number of recent pics, including the casting marks on the bow and turret.

Thanks Chuck - that gives a good satellite view:

I'm not aware of any recent pictures from you of the HVSS M4A1, just the VVSS one.
