Alabama M60's, M48, and a "Lingle"
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Alabama M60's, M48, and a "Lingle"

Was in Alabama this weekend and did some tank searching,

Got these:

M60A3 Ozark AL
SN 3686A, RN 9B7725, Former M60A1 SN 3543, Location 31.425130, -85.616880, AL ARNG Armory.

M48A1 Ozark AL No SN or other markings, was one of the original M48A1's that came with the Chrysler cupola before being upgraded with the M1 enclosed type. The steel ring along the bottom along with the torched off stowage points on the turret indicate so.

M60A3 Hartford AL SN 3769A, RN 9B5655, Former M60A1 SN 2329, Location 31.097420, -85.707450, In front of AL ARNG Armory

M60A3 Florala AL SN 3690A, JJ00F4, Location 30.997115, -86.299445, In front of AL ARNG Armory

M60A3 Abbeville AL SN 3828A, RN9B7230, Former M60A1 SN 3637, Location 31.572155, -85.244050, In front of a closed AL ARNG Armory

M60A3 Samson AL SN 3713A, 9B8207, Former M60A1 SN 3971, Location 31.107530, -86.024990, This is a new one not listed in AFV Register 3.0. Found it by accident heading to Hartford. In front of a closed AL NG Armory

M114 Eufala AL No SN or RN I could see.

Hi,

Man, all of those Alabama sleds are in need of some serious lovin'. They look pretty uniformly awful, and seem to have just been stuck there without any effort to close them up or protect them from the weather. Sad to see.

On the other hand, the Lingle appears to have been attacked by Smurfs!

Chuck

Okay I know I am going to regret this but what is a 'Lingle' - some form of STD?

Roy Lingle, Former Marine and then 11th ACR Vietnam Vet (Scout). Used to post here regularly but has been absent for a while. From what I understand the name was given on the old forum since the M114 never had an official one. He spent quite some time on them so the name stuck here.

Doug could shed more light on the subject since he was a member when it happened.

I met Roy back in June 2007 at Fort Bliss, He bought me my first beer when I returned from Iraq. Great Guy.

It's an old "inside joke" and tribute for former poster (and Troop-mate of mine in VN) Roy Lingle, who doesn't come around much anymore since discovering Facebook. He's still out there, but site is hard for him to access from where he can log on. Roy had a fair amount of M114 time in another life.

As Joe said...
It's also a play on the joke of non-existent names for armored vehicles begun by he who's-name-I-shall-not-mention and his ridiculous M113 "Gav!n" crusade. The M114 as "Lingle" began as a sort of parody of that sort of thing. But with humor at it's base. Wink
