LRAS3 questions
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: LRAS3 questions

Hello,

I used to post regularly on this site several years ago when it was part of George Bradford's website (I hope I have the right discussion group). I have been distracted by some other things in the intervening years, but have never lost my interest in armored vehicles. I always came to this group when I had a question I could not find an answer for in the references available to me, and I usually received a ton of helpful information. That is why I have returned.

I was wondering if anyone could answer the following questions conerning the LRAS3 system:
-is there a difference in field resolution between viewing imagery directly from the eyepieces of the LRAS3 and viewing imagery displayed on an LCD screen remote from the LRAS3?
-does the LRAS3 have superior range/resolution compared to the Abram's CITV and Bradley's CIV?
-how valuable is the option to unmount the LRAS3 system from it's vehicle base and use the unit in dismounted operations?

I have a modelmaking project in mind of trying to redesign either the M1114 or M1200 with the LRAS3 using a mast-mounted system at the rear of the vehicle, with a configuration somewhat similar to the Dutch/German Fenneck.

Thanks for any help.

Hello,

You do, that was the genesis of this site (it became necessary to move to a secure location after spambots nearly wrecked the DG).

As to your question, it's going to take someone a lot younger than me to answer it!

D.

Hi Folks! Hi Jagdcat!

I can't answer your questions about field resolution but it is my understanding that the dismounted option can come in handy when the LRAS3 needs to be placed on a high spot. Like the top of the control tower at the Bagdad airport during OIF. As for using it to support light infantry type ops, it a bit on the heavy side for that type of operational use.
