Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, PA Vehicles
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi All,
Just curious if anyone has visited the Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, PA area yet? I was searching the area on Google Earth and found 5-6 items on display by a guard gate there. They are located at intersection of Coffee Ave. and Advantage Ave. on the east side of the golf course there. I searched the AFV register and noticed the M52 and M55 SP Guns are listed there as displays. Lat. N40 04.60 Long. W77 38127. I think these numbers are correct? I'm going to try a visit there next year to see what they have. Rick

Hi All,
Since I was planning a trip to PA I went to Letterkenny Army Depot today. A few weeks ago I tried to contact a PAO there, with no response. So I took a gamble and drove there. Be aware that there are 8 displays just outside the main gate and ask the Security Guys permission first! They will not allow photographs towards the Depot. Since the Depot is active, they are security sensitive. The items were in nice shape for being outside they are: M270A1 MLRS, M42A1 Duster twin 40mm SPAAGs, M52 105mm SPH, M55 155mm SPH, M109A3 155mm SPH, M901 Patriot Launching Station, M1097 Pedestal Mounted Stinger AA System, and M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting System. There were also 4 concrete pads behind the displays, which I was told they were thinking about widening the road and moving some back this year, but it hasn't happened. Some photos will be attached soon.
Surprise regret of the day: The Thurmont, MD M60A0 "Training Tank Only" was not there and only response was that it was sent to another Post in Pennsylvania. He wouldn't say where. Rick

Whoa! The Thurmont tank isn't there??? I hadn't checked on it in a few months! I'll have to see what I can find out.

Did you see any of the other monuments in the area? There is are M5 Stuarts at Funkstown and Brunswick and an M114 at the Armory outside Frederick

Hi Bob,
If you find out where the Thurmont tank went to let me know and I'll eventually photograph it. I tried calling there last night and lost signal or was cut off, and did a search online a Geocache club had photographed it in August 2012. I was limited in time but will check out the three towns you'd mentioned on a later visit. I also know that Chambersburg had a Sherman and of the other area towns with tank monuments. My "day" trip consisted of 11 hours of driving with the wife helping for the first third of the trip. Rick

It may be after Christmas before I can work on it. I have some indirect contacts with town government over there. I 'll work the Good Ol Boy grapevine here in Frederick County Smile
I think I checked on it in early September. Funny thing I was up that way last week and decided not to get off of US 15 and check on it.
