Any Stryker Guys Out There? Photo ID
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Any Stryker Guys Out There? Photo ID

Hi All:

I am wrapping up a short photo reference article on the Stryker.

I was at Ft Lewis recently and took this photo of the wheels. What is that cloth covered item leading from the hull to the wheels? This is a brand new truck with only 52 miles on it. The crew even used Armorall on the tires!

So, is the tow rope (as opposed to the tow cable) unique to the Stryker, or is that carried by other Army vehicles too?

Lastly, one can see two blue NAPA auto parts oil bottles in the sponson box. I saw these at the NTC too. Are these bottles used in Iraq too, or is this just a stateside thing. If Iraq is different, what do they look like?

Thanks everybody.

Bob

Hi Bob! Hi Folks!

"What is that cloth covered item leading from the hull to the wheels?"

Could that be the control and air lines for the tire inflations system? That would be the only thing I can think of that would be. I wouldn't think it would be the brake lines.

"So, is the tow rope (as opposed to the tow cable) unique to the Stryker, or is that carried by other Army vehicles too?"

During my time, towing ropes for aiding recovery was common on wheeled vehicles. Bob, you are asking about rope and not that chain that is hanging off the side of the vehicle, right?

Thanks for another set of great photos Bob.

Yes, I am talking about the tow rope. I did not attach a photo of it.

Hi folks. Roy's right. The 'cloth' things are protective covers for the air lines.

In Iraq they probably use Army issue oil bottles. They are white and generally come in quart bottles however different sizes are available.

I can photograph one if it will help you with your project.

Here is a pic of the med evac version. This was the one with Armorall on the tires. I got a kick out of that.

Mark, that would be great if you could photo the army cans/bottles. This will be for modelers. Thanks!

(you might want to set your camera to the highest resolution)

Cheers.

Nothing new there, troops have been doing things like that to make a vehicle look good sense before my time (1964-1987). One time, I was ordered to paint the rubber on a M114 with gloss black paint. It looked good for a few days. After going to the field, most of it flecked off and what was left looked like s!@#.

I remember in early 70's we would wipe down our vehicles with diesel before a parade. Made them shine like they were waxed.

About the tow cable, that goes back to the old WWII halftracks! But I suppose it would useful only up to a certain weight limit. looking a light armor, the old Vietnam era Commando AC, the Marine LAV and the recent M1117 have a winch & cable. Also the armored Humvee M1114.

Mike

Those 'underbumper' winches were the WARN brand 8000lb or 10,000lbs winches. Same as commercial ones except 24 volt system.

Here's the tow rope. The Stryker has a winch too, on the left front side of the hull.

Cheers.

I wonder if the red and blue things in the photo are an air supply for trailer brakes?

That's exactly what they are.
