German Armored Train by Wolfgang Sawodny...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: German Armored Train by Wolfgang Sawodny...

Hi Guys-
I am thinking of the following kit as my Christmas present to myself:
5 Star Models 35003 - Panzerjaeger-Triebwagen 51 (1/35)
German WWII Armoured Train. You can see it for yourself here:
www.jadar.com.pl/5star...index.html
With the above in mind I am thinking of ordering the following books:
German Armored Trains on the Russian Front 1941-1944 (Paperback)
German Armored Trains in World War II (Paperback) both by Wolfgang Sawodny.
What I'd like to know is: Do any of you have either of these books in your collection? If so, what do you think of them? Also, which one covers the Panzerjaeger-Triebwagen 51? I am assuming one of the books would cover the Panzerjaeger-Triebwagen 51, if neither book does cover the Panzerjaeger-Triebwagen 51, I’d certainly like to know that!

Thanks-
Geoff Steer

Well, I have a volume entitled "German Armored Trains In WWII"(Schiffer Military Volume 17) and the only thing I see on the PTW51 is a line drawing that is not as good as the one in the link you provided and a blurry photo showing what looks to be a GI standing by one with a short caption indicating that they were probably never put into service.

I also have "German Armored Trains In WWII Vol. II" and again the only thing that appears in the volume is a decent small photo of one parked by a building with the following caption: "The Panzerjager railcars (No.51 ff.) with Panzer IV turrets (7.5cm KwK, long) were finished before the war ended, but they never got into service. The Americans found them as seen here at the factory in Steyr when the war ended."

They are small but somewhat useful volumes - sort of like the Squadron "In Action" series but with few line drawings and no color profiles. They do have tables in the back showing how many crew, consist & armament of the different trains and there are actually quite a few interesting photos of German armored trains in general. Hopefully, you can get them cheaply. HTH!
