Preserved Tanks in the USA
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Trevor

The photos you have for UID 1553 are not an afghan FT17 but the previously existing FT17 which was on display in the museum for many years.

The photos are following it being swapped with the Afghan FT17 in the museum, the original tank was transferred to Carlyle Barracks. Those photos are in 2009 when they loaded it up and shipped it out.

FYI: The second Afghan FT17 is pretty much untouched and still tarped up in RMP, without a turret mounted.

Regards
Don

Fixed, Don, I believe - please review:

UID 1175: FT at Carlisle (non-Afghan)
UID 1553: FT in RMP (Afghan)

Do you happen to have a photo of the FT in RMP? I couldn't see one among your photobucket albums.

- Neil_Baumgardner
Trevor, FYI, there are at least 3 surviving T23s including the ones from APG.

Neil

Fixed - the text was from my 1984 manuscript, so somewhat out of date.

UID 1449: T23 at FK

Many thanks.

Trevor

I was in the RMP for a short period today. It seems the FT17 has been shifted around. I dig up the more recent photos, although I'm not exactly sure where it is. I'll find out though.

If you look at the Sat. image of RMP it is sitting alone in the upper left from the green marker, next to a small building.

The update looks good. I guess I need to go thru all your more recent additions. Most of the ones I checked out seem pretty good.

Regards
Don

Thanks Don for checking it. I guess at a push I could use a picture from Bing Maps, though it doesn't work so well for showing small vehicles:

Meanwhile here is the full Carlisle entry I've just finished (pictures by Don and HellOnWheelsV100):

Location ID 88500: USAHEC, Carlisle

FT, M4A3 Sherman, M18 Hellcat

In looking for my Bovington Conqueror photo's I also found and scanned in my old Lulworth Comet ones. This is, of course, the Comet that transferred to Fort Knox, and which is now at Fort Benning. It has certainly travelled a fair bit!

Unique ID 1549: Fort Benning Comet

Trevor,
A link to some old B&W photos of the Tanks at the Chrysler DE Tank Plant is:

Pencader Heritage Chrysler Tank Plant. Type that into a search engine and You should find a nice historic document on the old plant. I was living in the Glasgow, DE area up until a year ago, and was only a few miles South of the old factory. The buildings have been bought by University of Delaware and are in process of being demolished.

Take care,
Rick Eshleman

Rick - just spotted that, I'll look it up, thanks.

Meanwhile to give background to the Brazilian M41B and M41C tanks I've added an entry for Cleveland Tank Plant:

Trevor,
Just a quick note on the old BMY (Bowen McLaughlin York) plant, which was merged with FMC to become United Defense Inc., then bought by BAE Systems(London). It is/was located in Bair, PA a few miles SW of York, PA USA city. I'm not sure of the status of it, but they built M4 Sherman in WW 2, and later M88 Armored Recovery, M109 series SPH and various other vehicles. I wrote an article in the original AFV News around 1983 about this factory. It's probably still there, but since the M88 ARV successor never happened they may only have built M109A6 or later variant SPH. My older daughter lives North of York city, so I'll try to venture there in the next year to see what happened to the plant.

Hi Rick:

I think that the plant in York is still active. I photographed these two M88A2s on the side of I-83 south of York in November 2009.

According to the shipping stencils, they were on their way to Kuwait.

Cheers,

Scott

Location 97900: Pacific Car and Foundry

I'll try to get to BMY next.

Rick, thanks for that. I've now written up BMY - if you have any photos or extra information from when you wrote the article I'd love to see them.

Location ID 88550: Bowen-McLaughlin York, PA

I'll add more vehicle links to it as I get to them (e.g. M88 - I don't yet have any in the database).

Scott - can I add your photo to the entry for BMY?

For background on the M4 HST at Armourgeddon (see Preserved Tanks in Britain thread) I have written up Sam Winer Motors:

Location ID 85500: Sam Winer Motors Inc, Akron, Ohio

(I have listed 10 M4 HSTs to represent the 40 or so that appear to be visible in Google.)

Any additional information and photos appreciated.

[@admins; any idea why photo links that used to display on this forum no longer do? Has there been a change to the way the forum handles links, perhaps particularly those with spaces in the URL? Looking back through this thread lots of the pictures no longer appear here, but if you put the link in a browser they work fine]

For background on the HSTs at Armourgeddon and Sam Winer Motors I have written up the main HST factory, Allis Chalmers:

Location ID 64800: Allis Chalmers, La Porte, Indiana

It seems pretty clear that the later HSTs (M6, M8, etc.) were built there but I'd appreciate it if someone is able to confirm that the M4 was built there.

I'd also like some good photos of vehicles being built there - can anyone help? Don, do you have any photos of M50s being built, perhaps?
