Post subject: Who has experience or knowledge about Gopro?

I'm interested in an automotive application...what's the minimal of their systems that will record coherent video (NOT extended stop action for LONG period, but 30fps video from a moving car). I don't have a smartphone, so can't use apps that let you review what you're seeing (since it has no viewfinder for aiming). I gather they have a start-stop remote control thingy. Also, it seems that good suction cup mounts work well where you have a smooth surface and they're pretty stable.

Anybody got any hands on with these?

Yes I have a couple of GoPro's and also did a project for my work using two GoPro Hero 2 HD cameras in a stereoscopic housing to record 3D video.

Only the latest GoPro's (Hero 3) have a remote control I believe, I think it's a part of their Wi-Fi kit ($19.95).

The Hero 2 and up will do great HD video, after doing the project for my work I was basically told to feel free to "function test" the cameras as frequently as I wanted to on weekends, and so I have several YouTube videos that were shot in HD with the GoPro hero 2 and downsampled to YouTube resolution (720 I believe).

But if you want the remote feature - which is well worth it because their normal controls are a PITA for helmet (or other hard-to-get-to-or-see) mounted application, the Hero 3 looks like the best bet...and has the advantage of being current product.

As for suction cup mounts, I have the big suction cup mount but on't use it only because for my application, it means sticking the camera out on an arm where the wind and turbulence will hit it, causing shaky video. But it sticks like a mother, no worries about t coming loose. Welcome to borrow it if you like.

And with anything that captures video, the other thing you need to have is lots of HD space to copy the raw video to, and some kind of editing software to chop out the stuff you don't want, and put together something viewable. Although current versions of Windows Moviemaker are pretty useable.

Captured in HD and transferred to YouTube and viewable in a multiple resolutions - first one is only up to 720p, others go to 1080 HD (if your bandwidth will support it Wink ). The video compression and YouTube do put a hit on the quality - the original footage is gorgeous, and SHARP!

Good cameras. Also tempting is the Garmin Vibe, but I don't know what it offers in the way of a remote.

Good stuff. I'll get back to ya' about the system.

Had time for two vids, and that's some serious hi-vis yellow you got there! Laughing Even some of the music was on my "to find and save" list. I know I heard the Banditos sampling "Peter Gunn"

Here's a version of "that other tune" that works pretty well....

Will follow up....

I should have added, that of my two GoPro's, the best one I have is a 720p unit that you are welcome to borrow, if you can live without widescreen format or any remote functionality.

Hmmm....that might be interesting. I"m not sure what the widescreen/not widescreen difference might amount to, but it might make for a good experiment before investing in one (I'm not sure much use I'd be getting anyway).

For automotive mounts, the views that seem to work best are from units mounted to interior ceiling (like suction cupped to sunroof glass) as they are stable, show instrument panel/driver action as well as road view, and are insulated from wind noise. I think this means of attachment would require the image flip option, since the camera will be upside down.

Jag's are fitted with a little black box these days, kind of like a plane's but slightly less suffixickayted.
Still need a cam' though.
Insurance companies here are getting daily closer to insisting on cam's being fitted.
It's already listed as an 'option' to reduce the premium.
Soon we'll all be passengers in robot transporters!

A safety road cam is not exactly what I have in mind. Wink

Yep, GoPros have a menu option for image orientation. Speaking of which, they also have a very cryptic menu system as well...I'll have to try to dig up my manual. The camera and some attachments are on a section of my garage workbench where theoretically I could grab 'em and go record something new, although I never do nowadays. I'll round 'em up and package them off to ya if you want to experiment.

It' actually possible to rent an SRT, even the later 6.4L models with "rated" 470 HP (experience and chassis dynos say that's probably 20-25 low of actual figure). Here's an outfit in L.A. that will rent you a 2014 for $200/day. It's an automatic, but in L.A., that might not be a bad thing.

I'm a changed man re automatics.
Woulda never had one before the Jag, and only succumbed because there wuz no option on mine.
Have to say, I probably shoulda been a little more open-minded over the last 30 years since I experienced one.
Sooooo much nicer now.
Mind you, I just know I'm going to fall asleep in it one day.
Do the same in my armchair in front of the t.v. and driving this isn't much different.
250 miles in it today.
The last 50 down tiny little single-track 20mph farm roads.
Toooo comfy.

But you have paddle or select shift, no?

I tried really, really hard to want the SRT8 with paddles (drove them on three separate occasions back-to-back with the Tremec 6-sp), but it was just not as engaging. Also, they clearly tune the resonators different for the autos. The Tremec is a great tranny. It equipped the first two generations of Vipers and is in all the high horse 'Murican muscle cars now like Shelby's, 'Vettes, SS and ZL-1 Camaros. Base Mustang GT's are using a Getrag (made in China) which is adequate for the loads.

Actually, with the 6.4L engine, you can drive all day and only use 3 gears...4 if on the freeway (it amounts to an overdrive, I never use it at less than 70-75mph). There is a 7mile twisty near here that I have never to leave 4th gear for (unless I want to), and that includes *ahem* 25mph (marked) esses. Laughing

Torque is you friend! The "exhaust manifold" on these are actually short-tube 4-into-1 tubular headers that are wrapped in a metal "cocoon", probably just for noise and corrosion protection, and collect into 3" pipe. Why anyone would spend money to upgrade this exhaust system for the street is beyond me.

Paddles are a silly idea.
I do have them on mine but I have only used them on a handful of occasions.
The box is 8-speed and the engine is quick enough that I can't use them to select gears better than it.
The only point to them is when you drop it into sport mode, and it's not that sort of Jag'.
It's quiet and comfy not roary and sporty.
I woulda rather saved a few grand and had it fully auto.

Plus... they're attached to the wheel not the column.
You go round a bend and have to look to see which paddle is which.
Crazy.
