Interesting photo of a Sherman Firefly
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Interesting photo of a Sherman Firefly

Note near gun mantlet

Appears to be an AT projectile that struck and luckily for crew inside , projectile bounced off armour.

From the information I have this particular Firefly served with South African forces in Italy during WWII.

Regards

Dirk

The Germans did some testing on noise levels inside a tank when hit. When hit by machinegun fire, it was 115-121 dB range, with 2cm fire in the 126-131 range. IIRC the threshold of pain is about 130 dB, a bursted eardrum happens at about 180 db, so assuming that noise increases with caliber in a linear fashion, a 75mm "ding" on the turret could be be rather unpleasant Smile

Close is only in Horse Shoes and Hand Grenades, but that was a near miss!

This Sherman is located in South Africa. In my spare time I am trying to view and photograph all examples of WWII Armour in South Africa.

Heck , even travelled about 600 kilometers to view and photograph a single 76mm Sherman . Yes I know , I should get another hobby Mr. Green

But it is kinda cool to view these machines - from the engineering and historical perspectives.

Another close-up shot.

OK this looks yucky because I had to electronically add the flash. Time to upgrade the 1652 digital camera Laughing

As far as I know I have viewed and photographed all 4 examples of the Sherman Firefly preserved in South Africa.

Thanks for a great forum

An important note to that would be the wearing of vehicle protective helmets with 'ear phones'. There is a remarkable amount of hearing protection afforded to the crew by wearing the helmets.

It is still a 'deafening' profession. (The proof being my own hearing loss and constant 'ringing' in my ears after 21 years in and around tanks!)

The phrase I use is "Close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades and thermonuclear weapons - but there the definition of close changes"

I call hits like that 'ice cream scoops' because that is what they look like to me. Several vehicles at Aberdeen have them including the JagdTiger. It has several on the frnt armor. The Nashorn at Aberdeen has one on the gun barrel where the incoming round clipped the barrel on the way in then appears to have taken out the cross brace of the travel support before entering the vehicle on the front deck/glacias

very nice photos dirk, humh?-- anything else interesting or out of the ordinary on the vehicle?

what do they say, pictures can say a thousand words...
i am glad the crew lived to tell about it. wonder what the german side of the story is? for the germans, probably their first shot, engaged at 2000m plus, at dusk, little drizzle, heavy clouds, strong crosswind, target just barely visible...

thanks!

Okay, I was close! Laughing Looks like the shot came from the rear of the turret.
