Question for Jeff Button regarding 1-66 Armor M60
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Jeff,
A while back you had posted some pictures of an M60 you said was in 1-66 Armor's Motor Pool. When I was TDY there it was one of those that "Got Away" Confused from me. I was wondering if you ever got any more info on it like Serial/Registration number's. I was recently informed (but not verified) that it could be the first issued operational M60. Unfortunately I never saw your pictures either Sad . Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe D

Hey Joe,
Let me dig some and see what I've got. I should have some pictures to post of it and I do believe I got the serial numbers as well.

Here are the exterior pictures I have of this tank. As I remember, the rear deck area had no serial stampings, and you can see what the tow lugs look like. It was unlocked and I peeked in through the turret hatch thinking it was possibly a runner. The inside was in very poor shape with alot of rust and if I remember right, there was a wooden chock-block wedged into position holding the barrel up. I'll have to find those pictures and if I do I'll post them shortly as well. I believe there was writing on one of the turrets interior sides in pencil but I can't re-call what it said. I'll just have to find those pictures as well. I hope these help some what.

Thanks for the great pictures Jeff,
I can't make out the registration number painted on it, but looking at the left front tow eye that you photographed I believe I see a serial number 16. Cannot tell if it is the last two numbers of a three digit or if it has a "Dot" in front of it. If it's 16 that should make it the first issued/manufactured operational M60. The previous ones would have been the converted M48's and 15 designated as training tanks (Armor too thin). Now I'm really sorry I missed it when I was there. Does anyone there have any real information on her ????

I'll have to see what I can dig up. I have been so swamped here it's unreal! I'll see what I can find out this week if possible. Any chance you'll be in the AO any time soon?

Nope,
Right now I am looking at being here until summer. Then who knows? The only thing I'm sure of is come Jan 2008 I will be a civilian. (and that's not a 100% thing). Rear "D" sucks. Did it once in my career and since then I have never ribbed the NCO's who were on it since. I'm sure you have the gang of chapter cases and misfits keeping you busy 24/7. Hang in there man.

I saw a 1-66 Armor HQ66 today but it was an M1A1. I believe it was 4th Infantry Division. It's says 'A TIME TO KILL' on the gun tube.

It would be a 4th ID tank alright since 1-66 is one of their armor units. I was in 3-66 AR back 98-01 timeframe, (Mortar platoon though). Usually the first letter in the "logo" on a tanks muzzle indicates it's Company, Alpha company in this case. HHC units started with "H", but maybe things have changed. HQ66 would be the Commanders tank. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

There are some mortar tracks here. M1064's. Is that what you had? It could be here.

Yeah, M1064A2's at the time. I was also in the FDC (Fire Direction Center) for a good amount of time as the FDC Chief, that operated out of M577A2's. All were pretty worn out and A3's were on the way when I left for Korea in 2001. I just stumbled across quite a few pictures of 1-9 INF Bradley's and Mortar tracks during a "Fog-Rain" exercise from May 2002 at Camp Hovey, Korea. Many misc vehicles as well. Makes me miss Korea and the Mech Infantry in general.
