Flamethrower Shermans at Jackson, Knox & Leonard Wood
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Flamethrower Shermans at Jackson, Knox & Leonard Wood

I had a realization the other day while going over my old Ordnance Museum inventory notes and comparing to Hunnicutt's Sherman (page 412 specifically).

First off, I have this picture forward to me by Joe DeMarco from Dave Haugh - its of the old Chemical Museum display that was at Edgewood Arsenal (now part of APG).

Starting with the middle tank, according to Hunnicutt, there was just one "E13-13" Flamethrower Sherman built based on an M4A1(75). Sure enough, I have just one M4A1E13 based on a 75 gun in the USA AFV Register - the one at Fort Jackson, and according to its display plate it came from APG (Hunnicutt also shows a pic of said tank on display at APG, presumably pre-Edgewood).

There was also an E13R1-E13R2 built (the tank on the left of the picture), based on an M4A1(76) (as far as I can tell Hunnicutt doesnt exactly say only one was built, but its a reasonable assumption?). Sure enough, I have just one M4A1E13 based on a 76 gun in the Register - the one at Fort Knox. s44.photobucket.com/al...or3/Static Display Index/Motor Pool/?action=view&current=M4A1Flamethrower.jpg

Finally, the picture includes a CWS-POA-H5 (the two-barrelled one on the right). Admittedly, there are several survivors - at Fort Leonard Wood, Quantico (in storage, but it was recovered from Camp Lejeune), and at MAGC Twentynine Palms - but one at the Chemical Corps Museum at Leonard Wood seems to make the most sense (particularly since the Edgewood Arsenal display was the old Chemical Corps Museum when it was there).

Make sense? Assuming it does, I'm changing the designations in the register to M4A1E13-13 and M4A1E13R1-13R2 respectively.

Neil
