M4 vs M4A1?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I read the Wikipedia definition of the M4 and it says welded hull with R975 engine. I know the M4A1 has a cast hull.

Is the plain M4 a composite M4?

Basically the M4 and M4A1 were the same candy bar in slightly different wrappers. The US Army originally wanted the cast hull tanks but foundry limitations forced the adoption of a modified design that used welded plate armor to allow greater production. The welded hull tank was M4 and the cast hull was M4A1. The internal components were the same.

The "composite" M4 was the last production of the M4 type. It used a cast front to the upper hull to reduce the number of weld seams and to increase strength. These were only built by a couple of factories and are generally associated with the later M4s built at the Detroit Tank Arsenal (Chrysler). The US Army never adopted an official "modifier" to differentiate between an M4 that was all welded and one that had a cast glacis.
