I am old enough to remember when the M60 was the top of the line US tank. I was surfing the LIFE archives on Google and came across some vintage shots of the days when the M60 was the new kid on the block.

Here is a group on maneuvers in September, 1960. Note the use of the cupola-side brackets that were installed for use of an M2HB (the M85 wasn't ready when the tanks were)

Is that a FORSCOM insignia?

I wonder why they didn't use an M-2 mounted in the cupola? Could have used one like the M114A1 had. The really bad part was the ammo was different. Rolling Eyes
