A friend of a friend is rebuilding a Sherman tank and is looking for a transmission. I don't know the model of the tank other than it's a Sherman. I guess I'm asking if anyone knows where to start looking.

Gearboxes aren't that hard to find, the only problem is that the pinion gear and the gear at the differential is ( or should be ) a matched set.

Poke around the net to find the military museum in Chilliwack BC. There are unknown numbers of functioning Shermans (well actually stripped M32 undercarriages) used in the logging (Madill Industries spar loaders) and hard-rock construction (Finning Inc. tractor drills) industries. Right now those two businesses are down, and there are bargains in the auctions. There is also a sub-set of industrial suppliers putting rubber on roadwheels and pads on tracks. For a finder's fee, I'm sure the guys in Chilliwack would be happy to help.
