What is this vehicle? (looks like an FT-17..)
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

http://picasaweb.google.com/PaulsPhotoPages/TripToTripoliAndBenghaziInLybia12Mar2009#5315002736613305186

Hello,

could someone help me to identify this vehicle, located in Lybia? It is for sure not an FT-17, not a Fiat 3000 or a Russkiy Reno. It could be an Italian vehicle..

thanks

Pierre-Olivier

I don't think its an FT 17. The front idler wheel is too small and the hull rear is too high and 'boxy'.

I assume the url means its in Libya,....perhaps Italian?

Taranov,

if you look to the Fiat 3000, you'll see that the front armour plate (between the 2 front idler wheels) has 4 vertical rivets on each side, but this vehicle has only 3 vertical rivets :

so it's probably not a Fiat 3000. There are also other major differences between the 2 vehicles.

I know about rivets, but design of nose section looks like Fiat 3000.

I agree, I also think that overall its a Fiat 3000 - perhaps a modified version of some sort...

I think these are 2 different vehicles. I've done a comparison photo highlighting distinct differences.

after some researches and the help of Jean TETARD, I can tell you that this hull is indeed a replica built for the Lybian film "Lion of the desert", made in 1981. You can see below that it is the same tank :

"One of several replica tanks built by British production designers in 1979. Because turrets were not well bolted to the hulls, they shake or rattle in some closeups of armour on the move."

the link to an article about the film :
